Fed: $5 million more for southern African famine aid
CANBERRA, Dec 16 AAP - Australia would provide a further $5 million famine aid in southernAfrica, foreign affairs parliamentary secretary Chris Gallus said today.
The humanitarian crisis in southern Africa had become extremely serious, Mrs Gallus said.
"More than 14 million people are affected by food shortage and the long-term outlookis worsening as the drought continues," she said in a statement.
Under this allocation, $2.5 million would go to emergency food aid under the WorldFood Program (WFP) and the rest would be used by Australian non-government organisationsfor feeding programs targeting vulnerable groups, including children and those livingwith HIV/AIDS.
In total, Australia had so far allocated $31 million to the southern African food shortage.
