NSW: Biggest ever protest hits Sydney to say no to war

Up to half a million anti-war demonstrators have taken to Sydney's streets in whatorganisers claim is the biggest protest in Australia's history.

Streets were closed and traffic diverted throughout the CBD, while police had to diverttens of thousands of marchers to avoid a crush in the city's Hyde Park.

Police say no incidents of violence had been reported.

Greens Senator BOB BROWN -- who believed the turnout was about 500,000 -- says theprotest was the largest in Australia's history.

Police say at least 200,000 people attended but the volume of people made it impossibleto accurately gauge numbers.

Rocks Superintendent PHIL ROGERSON agreed it was the biggest march police had encounteredsince the Vietnam era.

The protest was part of a series of rallies that attracted hundreds of thousands acrossthe country and millions worldwide.

Journalist and author JOHN PILGER joined politicians from the three main oppositionparties to address the crowd.

All warned the prime minister to ignore the show of people power at his peril.
