VIC: Ambulance service issues heatwave warning
MELBOURNE, Dec 9 AAP - Ambulance officers warned today the elderly, the sick and children
will be most at risk during a heatwave predicted for Victoria over the next two days.
"Many dont realise how life-threatening this heatwave could be and its effects could
strike very quickly," Metropolitian Ambulance Service Manager of Clinical Operations, Ian
Patrick, said.
Weather forecasters have predicted a maximum temperature of 37 degrees for both tomorrow
and Friday in Melbourne, with high temperatures also set for other parts of the state.
"During last summers heatwave, paramedics treated more than 100 patients for heat-related
stress, so it is vital we avoid the need this year," Mr Patrick said.
He said older people, children and the sick would be most at risk, and he issued an appeal
for their carers to check on such people regularly.
"Last year a number of people suffered alone because nobody checked on their welfare."
Mr Patrick said regular water intake was vital.
