FED: Pan chief says suspension unwarrented - paper

SYDNEY, April 30 AAP - The head of the drug company at the centre of Australia's biggestmedical products recall has labelled his company's six-month licence suspension as "draconian, unwarranted and most unusual".

Pan's founder and chief executive Jim Selim told the Australian Financial Review theproduct recall and licence suspension by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) wasan overreaction.

"This is a witch-hunt," Mr Selim told the newspaper.

"There has definitely been an overreaction and I am just shocked at the sudden decision."

Mr Selim said the TGA had not been fair to the company.

"I'm a scientist and I work with facts. And the fact is most companies have deficienciesbut they are allowed to be worked through and fixed," he said.

"In this business, everyone is given a warning first and then time to fix the problem, but we weren't given any time.

"Usually we talk issues over with the TGA, but this time they were just not in the mood."

Mr Selim also said there were "many many theories" on why the TGA decided to suspendPan's licence so suddenly, but he declined to elaborate further.

He said he was determined to restore his company's reputation by working with the TGAto resolve the issues.
