Qld: Company fined after incorrectly installing medical pipes
BRISBANE, April 7 AAP - A company which installed medical gas pipelines incorrectly,
depriving a hospital patient of adequate oxygen, was today fined $12,000.
JM Kelly Builders pleaded guilty in the Rockhampton Magistrates Court to a breach of
Queensland's Workplace Health and Safety Act.
The company, operating as Queensland Central Plumbing, had been engaged to disconnect,
relocate and reconnect sections of the oxygen and nitrous oxide pipelines in a hospital
operating theatre in December 1998.
The court was told the pipes were not installed properly, resulting in nitrous oxide
being emitted from the oxygen pipe.
Only the action of hospital staff prevented more serious injury to the patient who
suffered hypoxia, the court heard.
JM Kelly Builders also was ordered to pay more than $14,000 in court costs.
